A Cold and Drafty Bomber…
Several characters in Mel R. Jones’s epic WW II Literary Mystery Novel, Pursued: Ten Knights on the Barroom Floor crew the Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber. The B-24 was used extensively in WW II. It served in every branch of the American armed forces, as well as several Allied air forces and navies, and saw use in every theater of operations. For a glimpse into the thrilling and dangerous world of a B-24 aircrew, click and enjoy the embedded clip by Lou Costello.
Every day that passes we learn about the demise of more and more WW II veterans. Paradoxically, the more their numbers dwindle, the greater the present generation’s interest in these veterans’ global experiences in the greatest conflict of the twentieth century.
“I took a flight in the only B-24 bomber still operational, the Collings Foundation’s Witchcraft, and we experienced the thrill of a sense of yesteryear in the present.”—Mel R. Jones
Jones’s specific interest in WW II was stirred in 1973. Serving as an U.S. Army public affairs action officer on the news desk at the Pentagon, he was contacted by the Army Mortuary Service about news coverage on a B-24 Liberator bomber shot down in New Guinea in WW II, discovered 30 years later with remains recovered.
